Cornas

Granite! This type of soil is indeed rare in viticulture. It allows the Syrah vines, often trained in stake training systems, on the right bank of the Rhône north of Valence to grow into long-lasting, dense, and serious wines that sometimes require very long bottle aging. The wild, rebellious Cornas wines often provide serious competition to the noble Hermitage wines that thrive on the opposite bank of the Rhône. In the northern Rhône, the question often arises: Traditionalist or Modernist? This question can also be asked here: Jean-Luc Colombo is considered a pioneer of the 1990s, introducing more modern winemaking techniques. Those who prefer a more classic, traditional style will love the wines of Auguste Clape. They are made in an entirely traditional manner and require very long bottle aging before they are ready to be enjoyed. Since 1938, 125 hectares of vines in the steep, terraced vineyards around the 2,100-inhabitant village have had AOC status.
