What connects breathtaking 4,000-metre peaks in the Valais with the steep vineyard slopes of Hermitage? The same river winds through both landscapes. The Rhône is a full 810 km long, rises south of Lucerne at the Rhône glacier and, as the most water-rich river in France, eventually flows into the Mediterranean through a delta near Arles. The wine region of the same name is regarded as the oldest in France; just over 60,000 hectares are spread along 200 kilometres of river course in the northern and southern Rhône.
