with Madeira from 1920 and the dry wines from Crasto, Vale Meão and more – book now!
The finest wines, which can compete with great Burgundies and Bordeaux, grow in the northern part, which accounts for only 5% of the wine production (and of that, the AOC Crozes-Hermitage contributes around 50%). Famous appellations line up: Côte Rôtie, Château-Grillet, Condrieu, St. Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, Hermitage, Cornas, Saint-Péray. Most of them are located on the right bank of the Rhône. The only permitted red grape variety is Syrah. Among the white varieties, the very popular Viognier, the robust Marsanne, and the delicate Roussanne dominate. Trading houses have a long tradition here: Nearly half of all wines are bottled by houses such as Delas, Jaboulet, Chapoutier, and Guigal.
