France → Loire → Edmond Vatan
Anne Vatan produces, under the name Clos La Néore, arguably the most coveted Sauvignon Blanc of the Sancerre appellation and one of the most coveted white wines from the Loire Valley altogether. From about one hectare of vineyard in the heart of the Monts Damnés site, in a good year just 2,000 magnum bottles are produced. The Monts Damnés, set in the little village of Chavignol, are something very special for Sancerre fans, since the subsoil here consists of Kimmeridgian – a geological stage from the Upper Jurassic, found incidentally also in the best Grand Cru sites of Chablis. This clay-limestone soil, rich in shell fossils, provides a unique, mineral salinity on the finish and gives the Sauvignon Blanc vine a distinctive fresh minerality.
