Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg – Family Tradition in Vosne-Romanée since 1933

The Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg, based in Vosne-Romanée, ranks among the most consistently fine addresses of the Côte de Nuits. Across some eight hectares, parcels are spread across nine appellations, including the Grands Crus Échezeaux, Ruchottes-Chambertin and Clos de Vougeot as well as selected Premier Crus in Chambolle-Musigny and Nuits-Saint-Georges. The house is run by sisters Marie-Christine and Marie-Andrée Mugneret in the third generation. The wines stand for elegance, purity of tone and silky texture rather than power — a constancy over decades that is rare in modern Burgundy.

Founding and Owners

The story began in 1933 with the founding of the Domaine by André Mugneret (1905–1986) and Jeanne Gibourg (1906–1997), who had married in 1928 and settled in Vosne-Romanée in 1930. The original range comprised Bourgogne Rouge, Vosne-Romanée, Nuits-Saint-Georges and Échezeaux Grand Cru. Their only son, Dr. Georges Mugneret (1929–1988), an ophthalmologist in Dijon, expanded the inheritance through targeted purchases: Clos Vougeot in 1953 (the historically first acquisition), the first Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru in 1971, Ruchottes-Chambertin in 1977 with the support of Charles Rousseau, Les Vignes Rondes in 1982 and Les Feusselottes in Chambolle-Musigny in 1985. These parcels were marketed under the label Domaine Georges Mugneret.

After Dr. Georges Mugneret’s early death in 1988, his widow Jacqueline and his daughter Marie-Christine took over the leadership. From 1992 Marie-Andrée joined them. In August 2009 the two formally separate Domaines — Mugneret-Gibourg and Dr. Georges Mugneret — were merged into a single entity. Meanwhile the fourth generation — Lucie, Fanny and Marion — is gradually being brought into the operation.

Philosophy

The sisters pursue a carefully traditional approach. The cellar has been modernised, a sorting table and a pneumatic press added — but vinification remains fundamentally true to their father’s line. The stylistic aim is elegance before power, precision before effect. The vines are worked largely by hand, the use of oak is calibrated and never dominant.

Sites and Terroir

The qualitative summit is marked by Échezeaux Grand Cru (1.24 ha) from two complementary parcels: Les Rouges du Bas, with over 70-year-old vines, for minerality and concentration, and Les Quartiers de Nuits for fruit depth and velvety texture. Both are picked on the same day and vinified together. Ruchottes-Chambertin (0.62 ha) was acquired in 1977 following the sale of Domaine Thomas-Bossot; half the parcel was replanted in 2000. Clos Vougeot (0.34 ha), the historic first acquisition from 1953, is considered with its fine Pinot vines (planted 1955) one of the best cuvées of the entire appellation — the vines today serve as a source for massal selections.

At Premier Cru level Chambolle-Musigny Les Feusselottes (0.46 ha), Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Vignes Rondes (0.27 ha) and Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Chaignots (1.27 ha) stand out — the latter with over 60-year-old vines. In addition the house tends 0.22 hectares of Nuits-Saint-Georges Bas de Combe and a total of 2.44 hectares of Vosne-Romanée Village plus 1.15 hectares in the lieu-dit La Colombière, which has been largely bottled separately from the 2018 vintage.

Vinification

The grapes are entirely destemmed — with one exception: the Échezeaux has been vinified with around 15 percent whole clusters since 2016. A short, cool maceration follows; fermentation over two weeks combines remontage and pigeage discreetly. Élevage takes place in casks from several coopers, mainly Rousseau, François Frères (especially for the Grands Crus), Billon and Cavin, each with medium toast. The new-oak proportion is 30 percent for Village wines, 40 to 45 percent for Premier Crus and around 70 percent for Grands Crus. After malolactic conversion the wines are moved into a second cellar and, after a further winter in cask, finally bottled.

Key Wines

The Échezeaux Grand Cru is the most expressive bottle experience of the house — velvety fruit over a mineral foundation. Ruchottes-Chambertin shows floral aromatics and fine-grained minerality. Clos Vougeot convinces through depth and structure. Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Chaignots combines the elegance of Vosne-Romanée with the backbone of Nuits-Saint-Georges.

Style

The wines are distinguished by perfumed fruit, fine spice, silky tannins and pure-toned acidity. Marie-Christine and Marie-Andrée stand for a linear, somewhat cool reading of Burgundy — far from the opulent style of some neighbours.

Cellaring Potential

Village wines mature eight to twelve years. Premier Crus reach their peak between ten and eighteen years. The Grands Crus — above all Échezeaux and Ruchottes-Chambertin — cellar comfortably twenty to thirty years.

Market Prices (Europe, EUR)

Buying Guidance

Anyone wishing to get to know the house begins with the Vosne-Romanée Village or the Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Chaignots. For collectors, Échezeaux and Ruchottes-Chambertin are the strategic priorities.
