History and Ownership

The story begins in 1365 with Verrier du Bosq; a branch of the royal Valois line gave the estate the lilies in its coat of arms, and in the 18th century the Scottish seafarer George Smith lent it his name. In the 19th century it was owned by Lodi Martin Duffour-Dubergier, the Mayor of Bordeaux who signed the 1855 classification – without, selflessly, including his own estate. Daniel and Florence Cathiard – once Olympic skiers, later founders of the sports retail chain Go Sport – bought the neglected estate in 1990 and led it to the top. The vines stand on a rise of Pyrenean gravel (“Graves günziennes”), into which they drive their roots more than six metres deep; the mirror effect of the stones ensures fully ripened grapes. One of the Cathiards’ first steps was to abandon all chemical inputs; today the estate is fully organic (certified since 2019, with “precision organics” thanks to drone and satellite technology), with over half the vineyard farmed biodynamically. Horses plough the vines, the compost is made in-house, the barrels are crafted in the estate’s own cooperage (since 1995), and the rootstock vines grow on a private island in the Garonne – a rarity in Bordeaux. CO₂ produced during fermentation is converted into sodium bicarbonate (recognised in 2015 with a presentation at the UN Climate Conference). The red wine ages for 18 months in 30 to 60 percent new oak; in more recent vintages, a small proportion of whole clusters is being trialled.
