Invitation: Unknown facts about world-renowned grape varieties, part II

There is simply no way that these grape varieties could be called unfamiliar: as Austria’s flagship red-wine vine, Blaufränkisch is currently causing an international sensation. Cabernet Sauvignon & Merlot are among the most widely planted red grapes in the world, and also produce some of the most highly prized wines. What’s new to tell?

A tremendous amount, actually – when such a resourceful natural scientist as Dr José Vouillamoz from Switzerland takes the floor. The internationally renowned grape geneticist will be appearing with May Wines for the second time to conduct two of their popular online seminars: The Last Secrets of Blaufränkisch, Cabernet Sauvignon & Merlot.

Blaufränkisch
Wednesday 6 April 2022, 13.00–13.45 or 17.00–17.45 (UTC+1)
Blaufränkisch seminar via ZOOM in English.

Dr Vouillamoz will share the latest knowledge with you about the Blaufränkisch family tree, relating groundbreaking genetic discoveries that have only recently been made. Blaufränkisch is the grape variety fuelling the new Austrian red wine wonder, responsible for wines with top ratings such as Moric 2019 Alte Reben Lutzmannsburg from Roland Velich (98 points by James Suckling) or Dorli Muhr’s Spitzerberg 2017 (94 points in the Wine Spectator) or Perwolff 2019 from Reinhold Krutzler (100 points in the current Austrian wine guide À la Carte). The variety is typically characterised by a deep & complex, vibrant fruit profile, frequently accompanied by notes of leather and dark chocolate. A perfect framework of tannins and distinctive acidity give Blaufränkisch potential for years and years of cellaring.

Thursday, April 7, 2022, 13.00– 13.45 or 17.00–17.45 (UTC+1)
Cabernet Sauvignon & Merlot seminar via ZOOM in English.

Everyone knows them, almost everybody loves them, and they are cultivated all the way around the globe: Cabernet Sauvignon vines are currently growing on no fewer than 300,000 hectares worldwide. At 270,000 hectares, Merlot takes no back seat in popularity. And is not uncommon for both to be blended together in a cuvée after vinification. But when do really great wines emerge from this? And what might genetics say about the potential of these two varieties? This is what Dr José Vouillamoz will cover on the second day of the online seminar: The Last Secrets of Blaufränkisch, Cabernet Sauvignon & Merlot.
