Château Lynch-Bages – Pauillac’s “Super Fifth”

Château Lynch-Bages is a Cinquième Cru Classé of the 1855 Classification and lies west of the town of Pauillac on the left bank of the Gironde. In quality terms, the estate is regarded as a “Super Fifth” that comfortably outperforms its classification. On some 100 hectares of gravel ridge over limestone, it produces a powerful, broad-shouldered, Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated Pauillac. The Cazes family has owned the estate since 1938; following the death of Jean-Michel Cazes (1935–2023), his son Jean-Charles Cazes now runs the properties. The Grand Vin is complemented by the second wine Echo de Lynch-Bages; a white wine, Blanc de Lynch-Bages, rounds out the range.

History and Ownership

The name recalls the Irish merchant John Lynch, who came to France after 1691 in the wake of the “Flight of the Wild Geese”; the estate remained in the hands of the Jurine and Cayrou families for over a century. In 1933/34, Jean-Charles Cazes, a baker from Pauillac, leased the estate and bought it in 1938/39. His grandson Jean-Michel Cazes returned in 1973 from a career in engineering (IBM) and thoroughly modernised the estate over the following fifteen years. A tireless traveller and “ambassador of Bordeaux”, he turned Lynch-Bages into one of France’s strongest wine brands, especially across Asia. Following his death on 28 June 2023, his son Jean-Charles Cazes (in charge since 2006/2007) now leads the properties; the technical director is Nicolas Labenne. Jean-Michel Cazes also revitalised the village of Bages and opened the hotel and Michelin-starred restaurant Cordeillan-Bages.

Classification and Status

Lynch-Bages is a Cinquième Grand Cru Classé of 1855 – yet in quality terms it is a “Super Fifth” that frequently performs at the level of higher-classified estates. The legendary 1985 vintage was named Wine of the Year by Wine Spectator in 1988; in 1985, a half-bottle of Lynch-Bages became the first wine to travel into space.

Terroir and Vineyards

The roughly 100 hectares lie on a gravel ridge above the Gironde, with excellently draining, deep gravel beds over a limestone foundation. Lynch-Bages is among the most technologically advanced estates, using satellite imagery and soil analysis to draw out the full potential of every parcel.

Grape Varieties and Blend

The blend comprises roughly 71 to 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22 to 24% Merlot, along with Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Cabernet Sauvignon defines the wine’s powerful, broad-shouldered character.

Viticulture and Winemaking

2017 marked the start of a comprehensive modernisation of the winery: the new gravity-flow cellar, designed by Chien Chung (Didi) Pei – son of Louvre architect I. M. Pei – was first used for the 2020 vintage and completed in 2021; it houses 80 stainless-steel tanks of varying sizes for parcel-by-parcel vinification. Ageing lasts 18 months in around 75 per cent new oak; malolactic fermentation takes place partly in tank, partly in barrique.

Grand Vin and Other Wines

The Grand Vin Château Lynch-Bages is complemented by the second wine Echo de Lynch-Bages (renamed from Haut-Bages Avérous from the 2007 vintage) and the third wine Pauillac de Lynch-Bages. The white wine Blanc de Lynch-Bages was first made in 1978 and has been commercially marketed since 1990. The family holdings also include Château Haut-Batailley (Pauillac, since 2017), Ormes de Pez (St-Estèphe), Domaine des Sénéchaux (Châteauneuf-du-Pape) and L’Ostal Cazes (Minervois).

Style and Character

Lynch-Bages is one of the most powerful, broad-shouldered Pauillacs: dense cassis and black fruit, graphite, cedarwood, liquorice and tobacco, carried by a structure that is both lavish and precise. With age, notes of tobacco leaf, leather and dark chocolate emerge. The wine unites generous richness with the mineral stature of a great Médoc.

Notable Vintages

The 1985 vintage was named Wine of the Year by Wine Spectator. Outstanding recent vintages include 2009, 2010, 2016, 2019 and 2020; 1989, 1990 and 2000 are likewise noteworthy.

Ageing Potential

In great vintages, the Grand Vin can age for twenty to thirty years and generally needs six to ten years to open up. Echo de Lynch-Bages reaches its peak after five to eight years, while Blanc de Lynch-Bages ages for five to ten years.

Market Prices and Price Trends

European Wine-Searcher prices for current vintages (retail prices incl. VAT, indicative figures):

  • Echo de Lynch-Bages around 30 to 50 euros
  • Blanc de Lynch-Bages (white wine) around 50 to 85 euros
  • Château Lynch-Bages Grand Vin around 70 to 120 euros for current vintages; sought-after vintages such as 2009, 2010 and 2016 sit at around 120 to 200 euros, with the legendary 1989 and 1990 higher still.

Lynch-Bages offers one of the best ratios of Pauillac class to price and is one of Bordeaux’s most popular brands.

Buying Guidance

The second wine Echo de Lynch-Bages offers an accessible entry point; Blanc de Lynch-Bages is a standout white-wine recommendation in its own right. For the cellar, the top vintages of the Grand Vin (2009, 2010, 2016) are the most strategically interesting positions – powerful, long-lived Pauillacs at a moderate price.
