Château Le Gay – A Leading Estate from Pomerol on the Right Bank

Château Le Gay ranks among the defining estates of Pomerol on the Right Bank of the Gironde – with part of its vines lying in the immediate vicinity of Lafleur. Pomerol is the only major Bordeaux appellation with no official classification. On around 10.5 hectares of clay and gravel over limestone, a concentrated, velvety Merlot of great fruit richness is produced. The owner is the Péré-Vergé family under Henri Parent, advised by Michel Rolland. The Grand Vin is complemented by the second wine Le Manoir de Gay.

History and Ownership

Le Gay has a long history in Pomerol, dating back to at least 1845 (then known as Domaine du Gay). Under the Robin family – with Christian Moueix as winemaker from 1984 – it was regarded as a good estate, though it lost some of its best parcels to La Fleur-Pétrus. In 2002, Catherine Péré-Vergé, the grande dame of Pomerol (1939–2013), acquired the estate from the heirs of the Robin sisters and elevated it to a new level. Following her death in 2013, her son Henri Parent has run Le Gay and all the family estates; the consulting winemaker until 2025 was Michel Rolland (now deceased).

Classification and Status

Pomerol is the only major Bordeaux appellation without an official classification system. Le Gay ranks among the defining estates of the appellation – an estate whose quality has taken a great leap forward since the 2005 vintage and which holds its own against its illustrious neighbours at a fair price.

Terroir and Vineyards

The vines are spread across several plots on the plateau, with part of them lying in immediate proximity to Lafleur – on a very high-quality terroir of clay and gravel over limestone. The château and cellars are located in Pignon. The oldest parcels hold vines over 50 years old.

Grape Varieties and Blend

The grape variety mix comprises 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. Yields are low – often down to around 25 hl/ha for the Grand Vin and 35 hl/ha for the second wine – which contributes to the wines’ concentration.

Vineyard Work and Vinification

A new cellar was opened in 2002/2003 and renovated in 2014; all parcels are micro-vinified in new oak barrels – a first for Pomerol – while the second wine is vinified in concrete tanks. Everything is done by gravity. Five temperature-controlled tanks allow for precise, parcel-by-parcel work.

Grand Vin and Second Wine

The Grand Vin Château Le Gay accounts for around 70 per cent of production, while the second wine Le Manoir de Gay (from young vines planted in 2006) makes up around 30 per cent. The family’s holdings also include La Violette, Montviel and Tristan (Pomerol), La Gravière/Moulin La Gravière (Lalande-de-Pomerol), as well as Bodega Monteviejo and Clos de los Siete (Argentina).

Style and Flavour Profile

Le Gay is classic Pomerol: violets, chocolate, fine spice – pure pleasure. The beautiful, rich, deep fruit of sweet plum and cherry is embraced rather than overwhelmed by the oak, while brighter notes of redcurrant lift the whole on the palate. The wine is impressive, at once pleasurable and with clear ageing potential.

Notable Vintages

Among the outstanding younger vintages are 2015, 2016, 2018, 2019 and 2020. Among the more mature vintages, 2005, 2009 and 2010 are especially worthwhile – the period during which the estate’s quality took a great leap forward.

Ageing Potential

In great vintages, the Grand Vin ages for twenty to thirty years and usually needs ten to twelve years to open up. Le Manoir de Gay is at its peak after five to eight years.

Market Prices and Price Trends

European Wine-Searcher prices for current vintages (retail prices incl. VAT, indicative figures):

  • Le Manoir de Gay around 25 to 40 euros
  • Château Le Gay Grand Vin around 60 to 110 euros for current vintages; mature top vintages (2009, 2010) command higher prices.

Le Gay offers big, concentrated Pomerol at a fair price compared with its illustrious neighbours.

Buying Guide

The second wine Le Manoir de Gay offers an accessible entry point. For the cellar, the Grand Vin in top vintages is the strategically most interesting position – a concentrated, long-lived Pomerol with a clear upward trend.
