The greatest wines of the Rhône are made in the north, which accounts for only around 5% of total production. Appellations such as Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage or Cornas define the area, most of which lies on the right bank. Syrah is the only red grape, while Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne shape the white wines. Stylistically, the wines of the northern Rhône are fine-fruited, precise and spicy, often with smoky notes or hints of black olive.

The very finest growths — those that can hold their own against great Burgundies and Bordeaux — grow in the northern part, which accounts for only 5% of wine production (and within that, the AOC Crozes-Hermitage delivers around 50%).
Famous appellations line up one after another: Côte-Rôtie, Château-Grillet, Condrieu, St. Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, Hermitage, Cornas, Saint-Péray. Most of them are situated on the right bank of the Rhône.
The only permitted red grape variety is Syrah. Among the white varieties, the very popular Viognier dominates, alongside the robust Marsanne and the delicate Roussanne. Trading houses have a long tradition here: almost half of all wines are bottled by houses such as Delas, Jaboulet, Chapoutier and Guigal.
