Nebbiolo
Nebbiolo defines the great wines of Piedmont, above all Barolo and Barbaresco. The late-ripening variety thrives best on limestone-rich hillsides and demands much patience. Typical traits include a pale colour, high acidity and pronounced tannins. The bouquet shows rose, cherry and fine spice, and with age also tar and truffle. In the past one had to wait a long time before the wines were drinkable. Today’s Barolos are more approachable earlier on and yet still clearly express their identity and greatness.
