We rarely exceed 14 guests, but for certain restaurants, it’s worth it. Made in Sud on Margaretenstraße 36 is definitely one of them. We have the entire place to ourselves, large-format bottles in tow, and that immediate feeling of being right at home. Patron Francesco Tedesco is Italian to the core – and you can sense it from the first moment: no compromises, just outstanding fish and meat dishes and flawlessly prepared pasta. He knows many of his producers personally in Italy – and that’s exactly how it tastes. A brief escape from everyday life in Vienna that transports you to Italy for an evening.

The Wines
Italians are known for their love of Champagne, so we begin the evening with two magnums: one from Krug and one mature Champagne from the 1980s by Moët & Chandon. Anyone craving more sparkling accompaniment later in the evening will be delighted by a bottle from Diebolt-Vallois.

Our white wine focus is on Grüner Veltliner and Riesling. The Wachau vintages 2000 and 2006 rank among the region’s best: dense, powerful, and radiant. A particularly exciting comparison is the 2000 Grüner Veltliner versus Riesling – two varieties that develop surprisingly different profiles with age. Warm, fruit-driven Veltliner years often reveal intense stone-fruit notes. The selection is rounded out by a Chenin Blanc from Brézé – Clos Rougeard at its finest.

Since Francesco loves both Bordeaux and Italian classics, the red portion of the evening takes us through Bordeaux, Piedmont, Tuscany, and Burgenland. The legendary 1982 Bordeaux vintage is rare today, especially in large formats, all the more special when a double magnum of Château Léoville Las Cases 1982 is opened, accompanied by Château Lynch-Bages 1982. Further highlights include wines from Figeac, Nittnaus, Bartolo Mascarello, Pichon Comtesse, Roberto Voerzio, and Ornellaia.

As is customary with us, the wines are tasted blind and revealed after each flight.
