Falstaff

Falstaff April 2022. Dark ruby garnet, violet reflections, subtle lightening at the rim. Fine, somewhat restrained wild berry jam, delicate raspberry and cherry notes, fresh orange zest, attractive bouquet, a hint of cassis in the background. Complex, full-bodied, highly elegant, sweet cherry fruit, integrated tannins, fine nougat in the finish, great length, mineral in the finish, assured development potential for decades.

Parker July 2021

94 The 2018 Insignia is a blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petit Verdot, 3% Malbec and 2% Cabernet Franc. The vineyard sources this year include: 30% Las Rocas (Stags Leap District),18% Yountville (Oak Knoll District), 13% Banca Dorada (Rutherford), 18% Suscol (South Napa Valley), 14% Home Ranch (St. Helena), 12% Las Rocas (Stags Leap District), 7% Barboza (Stags Leap District). It was aged for 24 months in 100% new French oak barrels. Deep garnet-purple colored, it comes storming out of the glass with powerful notes of blackcurrant cordial, stewed black plums and boysenberries, plus hints of cedar chest, graphite, menthol and wet slate with a fragrant waft of clove oil. The medium to full-bodied palate already demonstrates remarkable balance at this youthful stage, featuring a firm backbone of fine-grained tannins and bold freshness to support the tightly wound, crunchy black fruits, finishing long and spicy. 17,000 cases were made.

Joseph Phelps Vineyards

When Joseph “Joe” Phelps purchased a former cattle ranch in St. Helena in 1973, he had already built a successful career in the construction industry, but his passion was increasingly turning to wine. Convinced of the potential of the then-emerging fine wine region of Napa Valley, he founded Joseph Phelps Vineyards and wasted no time in building his winery. He never settled for mediocrity and insisted on the highest quality—if a vineyard did not meet his standards despite its prime location, he had it uprooted, according to those who knew him. His pursuit of excellence was always accompanied by innovation and a willingness to experiment: Phelps was one of the first Americans to establish Rhône varieties such as Syrah. And at a time when single-varietal Cabernets and Pinots were the norm, he created the first outstanding California Bordeaux blend made by a winemaker with the 1974 vintage—the legendary Insignia.

From the very beginning, the idea behind this top-tier cuvée (in California, the term Meritage was commonly used for such blends for a long time) was to combine the best lots from the top subregions of the valley. Even then, the winery focused on growing each grape variety in its ideal terroir. Today, the successors of Joseph Phelps have access to grapes from some of the finest vineyards in Napa Valley as well as from neighboring Sonoma.
