The roughly 1,200-hectare AOC Saint-Estèphe is the northernmost of the renowned communes on the left bank of Bordeaux. Its wines are considered cooler and fresher, owing to gravelly soils on clay that delay ripening — ideal in dry years. Top châteaux produce long-lived wines with great ageing potential. Particularly noteworthy are Montrose and Cos d’Estournel, whose vineyards are separated from Pauillac only by a small stream.

The 1,200-hectare Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC, or AC) is the northernmost of the renowned communes on the Left Bank. The character of St. Estèphe wines is cooler and fresher than that of its neighbours, unless the blends contain a higher proportion of Merlot.
Gravel on a subsoil of clay is, after all, cooler — because it allows water to drain less freely. This delays ripening, which in dry years is ideal. The best châteaux produce wines with decades of ageing potential.
We are particularly enthusiastic about the wines of Château Montrose and Cos d’Estournel — both 2èmes Grand Crus. Only a small stream separates the vineyards of Cos d’Estournel from a very prominent neighbour in Pauillac — Château Lafite.
