Pomerol

FranceBordeauxRight Bank → Pomerol

Pomerol, around 800 hectares in size, owes its early renown to Belgian merchants. In the 1950s the British discovered the legendary Château Pétrus, the epitome of opulent, Merlot-driven wines and today one of the most sought-after wines in the world. Low yields ensure the highest quality. As the only major Bordeaux appellation without a classification, Pomerol convinces purely through style — also at estates such as Le Pin, Lafleur and L’Évangile.

It was the Belgians. Through them the wines from this 800-hectare growing area gained great renown at the start of the 20th century: 100 years ago Pomerol was bottled by merchants in Belgium and exported to neighbouring countries.

In the 1950s, British wine merchants stumbled upon the most famous estate of the area: Château Pétrus. Like hardly any other, it stands for opulent, wonderfully splendid, Merlot-dominated red wines. Pétrus is one of the most sought-after wines in the world. The house, like other top estates, severely limits its yields.

Pomerol, incidentally, is the only one of the great Bordeaux growing areas without a classification! The style of this unique appellation can also be found in (somewhat) less sought-after châteaux: Le Pin, Lafleur, L’Église-Clinet and L’Évangile are always worth investing in!
